Patricia McKay Obituary

Patricia Ann McKay (née Schergen), 92, of Park Ridge, IL., passed away peacefully at home early Monday morning, January 22, 2024, with her beloved children by her side.

Pat’s life began at St. Vincent’s Catholic Orphanage in Chicago, IL. on August 19, 1931. Pat was adopted by the late Charles and Mary (née O’Brien) Schergen of Chicago, IL, whose love, generosity, and kindness resulted in Pat’s beautiful, well-traveled, and wholly fulfilled life. Pat was a proud alumna of The Immaculata High School in Lakeview, Chicago, IL. Deeply rooted in her Catholic faith, she took great pride in her Irish heritage.

Pat married the love of her life, the late Michael J. McKay Jr., Chicago Police Department, on February 12, 1955, and they enjoyed over forty-three years of marriage together. Their union produced Pat’s greatest treasures—her six children: the late Michael J. III, Dennis, the late Kevin, Mary Patricia, Timothy, and Colleen. An only child herself, Pat was fulfilled by providing her many children with a spectacular childhood. An “iron lady,” Pat was the rock of the McKay family and the hallmark of their surrounding community. While simultaneously enjoying the fruits of a decorated, long-tenured career in the commercial banking and financial services industry, Pat volunteered her time to numerous philanthropic and community organizations. For many years the McKay household revolved around activities at St. Monica Parish on the Northwest side of Chicago. Pat was President of Women’s Club, a church lector, vocalist and was instrumental in building a new church when the parish was in need. She supported Holy Cross High School as President of the Ladies’ Guild and was often found coordinating the snack shack at Friday Night football. Pat thrived at work for Columbia National Bank of Chicago and later at the Bank Administration Institute, making an impact at both organizations for over 40 years upon her retirement at 82.

In her later years, Pat took great delight in her many travels across the United States and Europe—particularly when accompanied by family and friends. When not traveling, Pat simply enjoyed being around people. Those who knew Pat describe her vibrance, vivacity, and zest for life with great measure. Pat knew no stranger, and her bright smile spread happiness to all who encountered her. Pat’s family is at peace knowing that her life brought so much happiness to others.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Schergen, her husband, Michael J. McKay Jr., her two sons: Michael J. McKay III and Kevin C. McKay, daughter-in-law Cindy L. McKay and her granddaughter Jessica H. McKay. Pat is survived by her cherished children: Dennis McKay of Park Ridge, IL, Mary Patricia McKay (Alan Hall) of East Dundee, IL, Timothy McKay of Chicago, IL., and Colleen (Dan) Langner of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by her devoted grandchildren: Kevin C. McKay II, Brittany McKay, Kaitlin McKay, Scott McKay, Megan McKay, Daniel McKay, Michael McKay, Jack Langner, Corey Langner, Ryan Langner, Rebecca Cortino, Krista Cortino, and great-grandchildren Skylar McKay and Payton McKay. She was a dear cousin, godmother, and sweet Aunt Pat to many. She adored all of her St. Monica boys. She will be deeply missed, and the departure of her spirit on this earth will create a void in the hearts of all who loved her. May she rest in eternal peace with God.
