Marv attended the University of Michigan as a football scholarship athlete from 1953-1957. After receiving his undergraduate business degree from Michigan, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Marv received his Master of Education Administration. At Michigan, he met the only woman he ever loved, Phoebe Lyle Foree, and they married February 2, 1957. In 1969, Marv and family moved to Barrington, Rhode Island, where he was an assistant coach at Brown University.

Following his time at Brown, Marv, Phoebe and family moved to Northbrook where they would spend the next 53 years raising four children.

Marv founded the M.R. Nyren Company in 1963 where it remains a successful family-operated business today.
