Marvin Nyren, Sr. Obituary

Marvin Roy Nyren, Sr., age 86 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 27, 2022. Marv was born March 22, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois to Bernice and Rudolph Nyren.

Marv and his parents resided in Des Plaines where he attended Maine Township High School and excelled in all sports with a special talent and love for football. Marv attended the University of Michigan as a football scholarship athlete from 1953-1957. After receiving his undergraduate business degree from Michigan, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Marv received his Master of Education Administration. At Michigan, he met the only woman he ever loved, Phoebe Lyle Foree, and they married February 2, 1957. Their love for each other and passion for family was the focus of their lives for 65 years and remained a model of love for family and friends.

After leaving Michigan and Ann Arbor, they settled in Park Ridge where Marv started his lengthy football coaching career as an assistant at Maine West High School. In 1964, he was named the first Head Football Coach at Maine South High School and led them to a perfect record in 1968 and a top 5 national rank. In 1969, Marv and family moved to Barrington, Rhode Island, where he was an assistant coach at Brown University.

Following his time at Brown, Marv, Phoebe and family moved to Northbrook where they would spend the next 53 years raising four children.

Marv founded the M.R. Nyren Company in 1963 where it remains a successful family-operated business today.

Marv was a man of many passions including, traveling with the entire family, coaching and mentoring youths in Northbrook, and playing golf and paddle tennis at Sunset Ridge Country Club. Marv served as President of Sunset Ridge from 1989-1990 and celebrated 50 years as an honorary member this past year.

Marv was a man of deep faith and had an undeniable love for The Village Presbyterian Church in Northbrook where he served as an Elder and on various committees. His generous spirit and love of children contributed to his passion for St. Jude Hospital and the many charities he assisted.

Above all, Marv was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. Marv will be missed by his wife of 65 years, Phoebe, his children Kimberley (Donald) Peeler, Marvin (Kimberly) Nyren, Jr., Tracey (John) Neptune and David (Carolyn) Nyren, his 13 grandchildren; Chase (Sean) Prendergast, Bailey Hall, Georgia (Curt) Pritchard, Scott (Keely) Peeler, Kelsey (Daniel) Kik, Claire (Richard) Kolb, Emma Nyren, David Nyren, Jr., Jennifer (Ryan) Kuhns, Samuel Nyren, Hannah Nyren, Marvin Nyren III, Chloe Nyren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
